Existing Conditions
A 50-foot wide pipeline right-of-way contained an 18-inch refined product pipeline. The 18-inch pipeline crosses Dyer Ditch between a railroad corridor and a residential area in Lake County, Indiana. Downcutting of the creek bed caused the banks to become steep and unstable; scour had developed a small span beneath the pipeline. The ditch banks and ditch bed are composed of clay. The banks were approximately 12 feet high and were well vegetated.
AFTER
Solution
The project area was dewatered and graded to yield stable slopes that are less susceptible to erosion. Fill was placed underneath and around the suspended pipeline. A geotextile material was placed atop the grade, followed by the Submar articulating concrete mat system which extends across the channel from bank to bank.
The mat 'tail' on the downstream end will protect the pipeline from headcuts that may try to move upstream through the ROW. Submar’s articulating concrete mat system will provide and maintain cover over the pipeline in the matted area.
