San Jacinto River Tributary

Montgomery County, Texas

BEFORE

Existing Conditions

In a tributary to West Fork San Jacinto River in Montgomery County, Texas, four pipelines owned by multiple operators were exposed following multiple rain events, including a severe 10-inch rainfall that caused lateral migration and extreme headcutting across the ROW. Further, downstream materials excavation created a significant drop in elevation which led to the headcutting. Pipe supports had been installed on all pipelines due to the depth of the channel and the long span of the exposed pipelines.

AFTER

Solution

An earthen dam and a wellpoint system with vacuum pumps, jet eductors, and piezometers were installed to provide groundwater control. The pipe supports were removed and two sheet pile walls were installed downstream. Two 42-inch diameter by 185-foot long sectional culverts were installed and the culverts were encased with a concrete collar at the sheet pile wall interface. Stone, concrete footings, and wingwalls were installed on the inlets and outlets of the culverts for proper channel flow. Earthen fill was installed and compacted to the specified grade above the pipelines. A geotextile fabric was placed on the grade and the Submar articulating concrete mattress system was installed across the entire ROW. The mats were banded together and the edges were toed into anchor trenches. A concrete trench was installed between the sheet pile wall and downstream end of the mat system. Rock grade control structures were installed upstream of the culvert inlet and downstream of the sheet pile walls to provide scour protection. Bank paving and rock were installed along the descending banks for additional bank protection. Finally, seed and straw were placed on the disturbed areas of the site.
