BEFORE
Existing Conditions
A 50-foot-wide pipeline right-of-way (ROW) had one 16-inch diameter natural gas pipeline in Lea County, New Mexico. Two sites, located 400 yards apart on the same pipeline, were being eroded directly over the pipeline ROW trench. Water running along the trench degraded the depth of cover on top of and adjacent to the pipeline at both sites. This created two long pipeline exposures immediately adjacent to the access roadway. Trenches that were backfilled with existing material and rip rap, and final grading was performed.
AFTER
Solution
The objectives were to armor and protect the pipeline, and to prevent future erosion of the berm. The following solution was implemented to achieve these objectives at both sites:
The site was graded, anchor trenches were dug, and geotextile fabric was placed on top of the grade. A Submar articulating concrete mattress system was installed over the geotextile fabric and the mats were banded together. A total of 67 mats were installed at the two sites.
The upstream, downstream, and flank edges of the mat system were toed into excavated anchor trenches that were backfilled with existing material and rip rap, and final grading was performed.
