The American Petroleum Institute Seeks To Prioritize Safety And Health
The American Petroleum Institute (API) is one of the largest components of the oil and gas pipeline industry. They have recently released their Energy & Communities Report, which provides feedback on how successful the industry has been in prioritizing the safety and health of all members of the community.

The American Petroleum Institute is one of the largest trade associations located within the United States. They represent all facets of the oil and natural gas industry, encompassing over 10 million jobs and accounting for approximately 8% of the U.S. economy.
There’s a good chance your company is a member of the American Petroleum Institute, as the association has 625 members. These members range from large integrated companies to service and supply firms. If you are an American company in the gas and oil industry who is not a member of API, you should strongly consider joining.
For those who are international members of the gas and oil pipeline industry, you may see API coming to your country soon. They have recently begun growing the international dynamics of their business. The association is well-recognized for the number of contributions they’ve made to the industry and American communities.
Prioritizing Safety And Health
API wishes to improve not only workplace safety but also various other components including air emissions and transportation. By promoting innovation from their members, they prove that they are constantly looking for ways to improve the industry and product the health of both the environment and communities.
The American Petroleum Institute has put nearly 700 standards in place to protect all those involved with the oil and gas pipeline industry. 240 of these standards have been cited over 4,000 in state regulations across the United States. 130 of those standards have been cited by federal government agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement has cited 96 of API’s standards in their offshore regulations.
These standards can be attributed to the workplace and environmental safety that has improved over the past decade. Even though the industry has seen enormous growth over the past decade, API cites that 99.99% of all natural gas and oil products arrive at their destination without incident.
Because of the importance that they’ve placed on health, safety, and conservation, API could be a great bridge between the oil and gas industry and the general public, many of whom are concerned about climate change. API has not hidden behind the fact that the industry needs to make an effort to reduce emissions, specifically methane emissions. API has pushed their members to engage with and educate communities. API’s end goal is for civic engagement and investment.
Similarly, API has also pushed their members to be completely transparent in all facets of the natural gas and oil value chain. This includes being transparent about contracts & licenses, production, revenue collection and allocation, and social and economic contributors. This will help build the bond between the industry and communities.
